Job Summary

The Controller position is responsible for the day to day accounting, Payroll and Accounts Payable operations of the Company which includes the day to day management and training of the accounting team, the issuance of the monthly financial statements in compliance with GAAP, maintenance of the NetSuite accounting system, ensuring a comprehensive set of internal controls designed to mitigate risk, and assisting the CFO with ad hoc reporting and special projects as delegated. This position is a member of the NOC Leadership Team and serves as a key leader and financial educator to managers within the company.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and Issue timely and accurate monthly financial statements in compliance with GAAP. Includes the preparation of the financial reporting package, variance analysis, and review of all BS reconciliations
  • Manage the daily activities of the accounting department (Ashville and Bryson City offices) overseeing GL Accounting, Fixed Assets, Payroll, and Tax Reporting
  • Hire, train, manage, set goals and evaluate the performance of the accounting, payroll and AP staff
  • Collaborate with Leadership Team peers to record/analyze their operations’ monthly results while ensuring their data analysis and reporting needs are met and understood
  • Assist the CFO as needed with the preparation of financial analysis, ad hoc reporting, and the annual budget
  • Comply with local and state government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Ensure adequate internal controls to safeguard assets and mitigate risk
  • Ensure payables are paid in a timely manner and discounts are taken where appropriate and available
  • Ensure receivables are collected promptly
  • Ensure payroll is processed properly and efficiently
  • Ensure that debt payments are made on a timely basis.
  • Manage the coordination of financial information requested by the external auditors for the annual audit ensuring all schedules are accurate and submitted timely

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of GAAP
  • Advanced Excel skills and proficient in Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with NetSuite (or other similar ERP/SAAS system)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills as well as acts with a sense of urgency
  • Strong leadership and emotional intelligence skills with the ability to influence others to perform their jobs effectively while maintaining responsibility for work done and decisions made
  • Demonstrated success in hiring, training, managing and mentoring
  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities to improve efficiency and then implement new procedures and systems as deemed appropriate
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work within given deadlines
  • Self-motivated with the ability to be internally inspired to perform a task to the best of one’s ability using one’s own drive or initiative.
  • Ability to work well in a team-based environment
  • Ability to travel to NOC’s various business locations (Bryson City and other outposts/stores locations in NC, SC, GA, and TN). Travel estimated at 10% or less

Required Education or Experience desired:

  • B.S. in Accounting
  • 2-3 years of public accounting experience
  • 3+ years of progressively responsible experience with a mid-size ($10-50M) company or division of a large company, to include a minimum of 2 years of supervisory/management experience preferably in a Controller or Accounting Manager position
  • Netsuite experience preferred but not required if experienced in a similar ERP
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a CPA or CMA designation

Physical Requirements and Environment

  • Must be comfortable sitting for long periods of time
  • Must be comfortable working in an indoor office environment
