Outfitting Assistant Manager
Background
St Regis Canoe Outfitters is a family owned outfitting business. We have been in business for 36 years. We rent light weight canoes and kayaks, as well as provide complete outfitting for people to get out on the water. We also offer guided day trips and multi-day trips. We provide transportation for people and boats, as well as offer to shuttle customer cars. We wrote the Adirondack Paddler’s Guidebook and produce the Adirondack Paddler’s Maps, which are well used by everyone in the Adirondacks. We are considered the leading experts on paddling in the Adirondacks.
The Adirondack Park is six million acres with a unique patchwork of one-half public and one-half private land. There are several designated wilderness areas and many wild forest areas that are very attractive to the canoeist. Nearly 30,000 miles of streams and brooks that emerge from the mountains and forests form the network of over 3,000 lakes and ponds. These rivers and their networks are perhaps the greatest multiple-use natural resources in the Adirondacks.
Purpose
St. Regis Canoe Outfitters is looking for an assistant manager who can take a leadership role in running the business. Eligible candidates must be passionate about the outdoors, paddle sports, and the Adirondacks. This role is pivotal in the future of our business.
Responsibilities
Assistant Retail Store Manager: responsibilities include: overseeing staff, working with customers for outfitting rentals and retail store; driving, equipment and grounds maintenance, other duties as assigned. Opportunities for work at our Saranac Lake Base in the village, and at our remote Floodwood Outpost outside of Lake Clear, NY at the edge of the St Regis Canoe Wilderness.
Required Qualifications
• Background knowledge in outdoor recreation
• Retail merchandising knowledge of stoves, fuel, tents, sleeping bags, paddles, canoes, etc.
• Comfortable giving direction to others, whether it be customers or other staff
• A genuine love for the outdoors and the Adirondacks
• A willingness to learn and be taught
• An enthusiastic personality
• A desire and ability to work with others
• Problem solving and communication skills
• Organizational skills and attention to details
• Knowledge of and experience with canoes/kayaks and camping/outdoor gear
• A valid driver’s license and clean driving record
• Basic Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and math skills
• Reliable transportation to and from work. The Floodwood Outpost is about 18 miles from the village of Saranac Lake.
• Cash register and retail experience
Desired Qualifications
• Knowledge of the surrounding area, particularly bodies of water
• Knowledge of and experience with maps, guidebooks, and map reading
• Ability to carry canoes/kayaks weighing 50-75lbs
• Knot tying skills
• Creative, flexible, good sense of humor to allow you to respond to whatever comes your way
• Knows NY laws for campsite and boat use
Schedule and Compensation
