Position Title:             Communications Associate Director

Location: Flexible within the Western U.S., Durango, CO preferred

Position reports to: Senior Communications Director

The Conservation Lands Foundation (CLF) is a national non-profit organization headquartered in Durango, Colorado with staff in Anchorage, Las Vegas, Sacramento, San Francisco, southern California, Santa Fe and Washington, DC. The Conservation Lands Foundation was established in 2007 on the belief that our public lands are best protected when there is a national network of local advocates working to advance a common conservation vision. 

CLF and its 80 community-based organizations that make up our Friends Grassroots Network work to protect America’s National Conservation Lands waters under the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) jurisdiction. Our mission is to protect, restore and expand the National Conservation Lands through education, advocacy and partnerships.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

CLF’s Communications Associate Director plays a vital role in designing and executing inspiring advocacy and fundraising campaigns, and sharing stories of our work in ways that continually deepen and expand the reach of our base of supporters. Our Communications Associate Director is a proven strategic communicator who can create high-quality written communications, produce visually inspiring digital content to mobilize our community to action, reach new audiences, appreciates that details are the building blocks of success, and is able to effectively manage multiple projects at a time.  

Our Communications Associate Director is able to: work with diverse teams; reflect CLF’s commitment to Equity, Inclusion and Access in our communications; and work collaboratively with our Friends Grassroots Network and other partners to proactively identify ways CLF can help them build their communications capacity and win campaigns.  

Our Communications Associate Director has or can build relationships with reporters and allies and brings a team-oriented approach to working closely and collaboratively will all CLF staff. 

POSITION OBJECTIVES: 

  • Manage communications and media campaigns for the proactive, defensive, legal and fundraising strategies necessary to achieve our annual goals.

  • Improve the impact and reach of our digital and social media content by consistently producing original content that resonates, engages and grows our online community.

  • Manage digital reporting and performance evaluations to improve our content and strategies. 

  • Collaborate with our Friends Grassroots Network to continually uncover and tell the “stories” needed to achieve our placed-based, policy and fundraising objectives. 

  • Serve as a communications resource for CLF staff, board and Friends Grassroots Network. 

  • Implement and strengthen CLF’s Equity, Inclusion and Access objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The successful candidate will be committed to the Conservation Lands Foundation’s mission and will have communications experience and an outlook that draws in and inspires others to support CLF’s goals. 

Desired Skills include:

  • Exceptional writer, editor, and communicator with an eye for details

  • Ability to produce compelling digital content 

  • Excellent time and project management skills and a multitasker with the ability to prioritize work assignments and wear many hats in a fast-paced environment

  • Commitment to advancing Equity, Inclusion and Access within the organization and in the execution of our work

  • Self-directed orientation with integrity, a positive attitude and a sense of humor

  • Experience developing search engine optimization plans and utilizing SEO tools 

  • Ability to prioritize and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders

  • Comfortable working in a team-oriented environment, with a high capacity to inspire cooperation 

  • Experience handling confidential information appropriately

  • Knowledge of digital media design basics and experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and Premiere

  • Knowledge or willingness to learn MS Office and Google Suites (Excel, Word and PowerPoint); NationBuilder and Airtable 

  • Driving, travel, temporary assignments and extended work hours may be required. A valid driver’s license is required


Salary Range and Benefits*:

$60,000 - $70,000 (based on qualifications.)

401(k) plan; health/dental/vision insurance; health and dependent care Flex Spending program and paid leave.

*Please note:  Due to COVID-19, the Conservation Lands Foundation is operating on a 32 hour work week. Paid time off will accrue at 80% until we resume to a 40 hour work week. Salary will remain at 100% (1FTE) and 401(k)plan and health/dental/vision insurance will be covered at 100%.
