Job Description & Requirements
Summer Camp Instructors
Duration: 3-4 Months (May/June to end August)
Calleva is searching for passionate and experienced outdoor adventurers. We are in need of outstanding Summer Camp Instructors for the following activities: canoeing, rock climbing, fishing, kayaking, rafting, sailing, stand-up paddle boarding. Instructors at Calleva facilitate a new adventure pursuit each week and lead small groups of campers as they explore a variety of outdoor recreation sites.
Calleva Instructors are certified and trained in a specific activity and facilitate week long outdoor adventure day camps, residential camps and traveling overnights for youth ages 8-14.
Applicants for an Instructor position should have great communication, teaching and leadership skills, plus a strong sense of responsibility and professionalism. They should possess extensive experience in their field of expertise and enthusiasm for sharing outdoor adventures with campers. A positive attitude, fun, flexibility and a strong work ethic are essential.
Qualified Summer Adventure Camp Instructors (over 21 years of age) earn $650+/week, while Counselors and Day Camp Instructors earn $450+/week. Additional perks include extensive training and development, pro deal purchases, personal use of program equipment, discounts on professional development courses and training certifications, and the opportunity to be a part of an active community of enthusiastic outdoor leaders. Bunk-style accommodation for staff (located 10 minutes from Calleva's main site) is provided for a small rent.
Calleva is located 30 minutes outside of DC and is a perfect launching point for wild and wonderful West Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. The two main campuses include Riley’s Lock in the C&O Canal National Park (great for water-based programs and fishing) and Calleva Farm in Dickerson, MD (a 165-acre working farm using sustainable methods and the hub for agricultural education and horseback riding programs).
Applications are accepted year-round for upcoming program seasons.
2017 will mark our 24th anniversary, and we can honestly say that this journey has been full of surprises and adventures!! Nick, Alex & Matt Markoff founded Calleva in 1993 as a small summer camp. Today, Calleva is known as an innovator in outdoor education, with 100+ school and community partners in the DC metropolitan area. Our success is built upon the passion of our founders, who love introducing kids to the outdoors and teaching them to achieve their very best in every activity.
Calleva was initially modeled after Valley Mill Camp, where the Markoff brothers grew up working with their family. However, over the years Calleva has developed its own unique brand of outdoor adventure that encompasses summer camp, wilderness educational experiences, environmental education and small-scale sustainable farming. Rather than headquarter all of our activities in a single location, Calleva has created an innovative variety of MOBILE programming, taking participants to the best parks, trails, rivers and rocks in our region while operating an educational farm in Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve.
