The Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS) is a non-profit adventure-based education organization that emphasizes personal growth through challenge and experience.  For over 60 years, our wilderness courses have focused on inspiring responsibility, teamwork, confidence, compassion, and environmental and community stewardship.

 

Summary

The Staffing Manager is an integral part of the COBS Human Resources Team and is responsible for overall management of field staff recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and scheduling for all new and returning program field staff. 

 

Working closely with both the Rocky Mountain and Southwest Program teams, this position holds accountability of ensuring that every course is staffed appropriately and in accordance with policies and operating procedures. 

 

This position supports and implements strategies around field staff recruitment, staff development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in line with COBS strategic plan. This position is supervised by the Human Resources Director, with functional supervision by the Director of Safety, Education, and Programs.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities

Recruiting, Hiring, and Onboarding

·        Project annual hiring goals for seasonal field staff to support high-quality programming; collaborate with Program Directors (PDs), Associate Program Directors (APDs), the Director of Safety, Education, and Programs, the Director of Admissions, and the HR Director to meet those goals.

·        Attract and recruit appropriately skilled candidates for field staff positions.

·        Prioritize building relationships with organizations among historically underrepresented and disinvested communities – Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), the LGBTQ+ community, and people with disabilities – to intentionally diversify the employee population at COBS and reduce barriers to access to jobs in the outdoor industry.

·        Grow existing relationships with organizations to support hiring goals.

·        Manage field staff job descriptions and postings, including keeping COBS’s website updated with recruitment materials and job openings; taking a critical look at the language used in describing our field staff roles and requirements for qualification from an equity and inclusion lens.

·        Oversee the application and hiring process for new field staff (instructors, logistics and warehouse support, and interns)

·        In collaboration with the HR Assistant, manage the onboarding of all new field staff hires.

 

Staffing and Scheduling

·        Oversee staffing function; develop and coordinate staffing practices to ensure the organization is positioned to effectively manage the seasonal workforce.

·        Uphold safety policies and procedures, and ensure all field staff are aware of those practices and are staffed accordingly.

·        In partnership with PDs and APDs, assess needs for seasonal field staff positions.

·        Ensure courses are staffed from a course quality and risk management perspective.

·        Manage seasonal work request process and work agreements for returning staff.

 

Staff Development

·        Support APDs and Program Managers (PMs) to ensure adequate mentorship, development, and evaluation of all staff.

·        Help identify general training and development needs for field staff and disseminate all related information to field staff.

·        Assist with planning and implementation of annual staff training and deliver training as needed.

·        Manage the advancement process of field staff. Ensure proper documentation is posted/accessible prior to promotion.

·        Collaborate with the Training Manager to advise and refine field training annually.

·        Oversee all performance issues with instructional staff in conjunction with PDs and APDs.

 

Human Resources

·        Manage the annual employment paperwork process for returning staff, ensuring all field staff paperwork is distributed, collected, processed, and documented properly.

·        Run payroll systems for field staff, track staff data, and manage field staff payroll changes.

·        Implement scheduling tool to allow multiple users access to staffing assignments.

·        Collaborate with program teams to ensure that all staff uphold and follow all policies and hold them accountable if they do not, which may include disciplinary procedures up to and including termination.

 

Administration

·        Manage field staff communications, including via monthly newsletters and social media posts.

·        Participate in monthly staffing call with OBUSA and OB charters and report back to Program Teams.

 

Skills and Experience

·        Recruiting / staffing experience, preferred, specifically with hiring a seasonal workforce

·        Experience building or managing database or tracking systems.

·        Proficient with computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Word, and Excel (ability to write basic functions preferred), as well as other programs such as Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), Smartsheet, or database experience is a plus.

·        Personal commitment to, and working knowledge of, diversity, equity, and inclusion work.

·        Knowledge and experience with outdoor recreation and adventure education programs preferred

·        Ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a team member.

·        Detail oriented with outstanding organizational skills.

·        Able to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously.

·        Effective communication skills with internal and external audiences.

·        Previous management experience is preferred.

 

Compensation and Benefits

·        This is a full-time position with a flexible weekly schedule.

·        Salary range of $45,000-$50,000.

·    Benefits eligibility for medical, dental, and vision insurance, where COBS pays a significant amount towards health care premiums and provides employer-paid short- and long-term disability coverage and basic life insurance.

·        401k with match eligibility after one year in the position.

·        20 days of PTO per year, plus one additional day per year of service.
