ESCC is a development and leadership program committed to building a more inclusive community. We provide opportunities for young adults from priority populations to experience and better understand the outdoors by providing transformational and immersive experiences and employment. Our members break boundaries, learn about themselves and others, and form a deep appreciation of ancestral lands through all our offered programming.  

This application is for those interested in applying for ESCC leadership opportunities including Assistant Crew Lead and Crew Supervisor Positions. Leadership positions provide support for all ESCC seasonal programs through administrative duties, logistical assistance, member and staff support, and partner communications.  You would represent ESCC and serve as a role model both in camp and during public events.  


ESCC Crew Leaders report to the program coordinator and executive director. Assistant Crew Leaders will work directly with an experienced Crew Supervisor. Crew leaders will guide, support, and assist a crew of 5-12 members, ages 18-30 on either our Range Crews including SEKI-CC or our technical trail crews, WILDlands. There may be leadership of affinity based crews.  Leaders are responsible for modeling and ensuring work performance, safety, and crew well-being.  You will work with ESCC staff to implement operating policies as outlined in the crew member handbook and all other necessary operational policies and procedures.

Essential Responsibilities and Job Functions:

- Willing to uphold and fulfill the mission of ESCC with a passion and drive for this type of work.  
- Able to work long hours in challenging conditions, often with little direct supervision.  
- Able to effectively communicate with state and federal partner representatives, the public, and ESCC staff.
- Implement service projects according to technical work specifications given by the sponsoring agency and ESCC staff with high-level quality and quantity.  
- Works with ESCC staff to implement operating policies as outlined in the crew member handbook and all other necessary operational policies and procedures.
- Facilitate all elements of season-long crew support and individual member development including coordinating crew members on the grade and in camp, trails training, camp life (chores, LNT, meal planning, and cooking), weekend recreation, volunteer events, and Leader of the Week (WILDlands Crews only).  
- Prepared to implement ESCC’s core curriculum, training, classes, as well as adaptations to fit each crew and season.  
- Able to complete and submit daily, weekly, and monthly paperwork including purchases and receipts, timekeeping documentation, conduct corps member evaluations, and submit other forms as needed.  
- Implements fair and appropriate discipline and behavior management of members as needed.    
- Assists with member illnesses, workers compensation and liability claims, and doctor visits including any transportation needs.  
- Assists with pre-season preparation, including building crew camps with gear, equipment, tools, and supplies. 
- Assists staff with member orientation and training.
- Assists with illnesses, workers compensation and liability claims, and doctor visits including any transportation needs.  
- On the ground logistical support includes food shopping and re-supply.
- Purchases food/supplies and maintains vehicles and equipment as required.  
- Assist with gathering content and social media projects.  
- Assist with post-season derig of vehicles, crew camps, tools, and equipment plus post-season paperwork and debrief.  
- Other duties as assigned.  


Compensation and Benefits:

Assistant Crew Leaders would receive a minimum taxable wage of $800 per week and Crew Supervisors would receive up to $1,000 per week.  This is a fixed amount, not an hourly wage or a salary and direct deposits will be made every two weeks.  

Orientation and training will include a wide variety of soft and hard skills training including curriculum planning, food menu and ordering, environmental awareness, cooperative living skills, conflict resolution, communication, facilitation, as well as chain saw/cross cut training, trail work, tool use and maintenance, backcountry travel, and much more.  

 
Preferred Qualifications:

- For Range Crew Leadership, a minimum of 12 months supervisory experience; for WILDLANDS a minimum of 24 months of supervisory experience of youth and/or young adults through a combination of conservation corps or a state/federal public lands agency.  Must include experience supervising young adults in service-related and/or leadership and development programs.  
- Assistant Lead positions require a demonstrated combination of previous corps experience, previous supervisory roles and recognition that this position is a leadership in training role.  
- Experience working with priority populations (Black, Indigenous, People of the Global Majority, Women, WOC, LGBTQ+ Communities).
- Experience in outdoor work projects required especially previous trail building and trail maintenance experience. Should have a familiarity with a wide variety of land management projects.  
- Experience with guiding diverse groups of young adults to achieve common goals.
- Certifications including chainsaw and crosscut operation or any other relevant certifications.  
- Previous backcountry living and camping experience is required.  
- Experience teaching outdoor and/or environmental education.  
- Wilderness First Aid/CPR or higher certification such as Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness EMT.
- High level of maturity and professionalism.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in computer programs, databases, and other relevant technology; including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Mobile-App Tools
- Strong time-management skills and ability to work independently as well as with others.
- Ability and willingness to work a flexible and varying schedule.
- Valid driver’s license and an insurable driving record are required.
- Must be able to pass a criminal history background check.
- Sense of humor.
